Abstract

This paper attempts to focus on the utilization of fly ash. Fly ash, a by-product from the combustion of coal in thermal power plants, is generated to the tune about 160-180 million tone in India per annum. Disposal of this huge quantity of ash is a challenging task and the generated ash is creating a lot of environmental problems. One of the best options for the effective disposal of fly ash is its utilization in building materials as bricks, blocks and cement. The problem with fly ash lies in the fact that its disposal requires large quantities of land, water and energy. For their weightlessness it can become air born easily and cause deleterious health hazards by polluting air, soil and water.
