Abstract

Introduction: Carbohydrate restriction, particularly at breakfast has traditionally been advocated in the management o f diabetes in pregnancy. Indian breakfasts are primarily carbohydrate based and hence this approach may not be practical. The aim o f this study was to assess if traditional Indian breakfasts, modified to include low glycemic index ingredients like legumes and w hole grains, would maintain appropriate postprandial glycemic response. Methods : This was an observational study o f the 2-hour postprandial glycemic responses to diabetic breakfasts served at an urban tertiary maternity center in India. Women were served breakfast with carbohydrate content of either <40 g (missiroti), 40-50 g (moonguradidli) or >50 g (bansirawaidli). Glycemic response was measured using finger prick capillary blood sampling. One-way ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis test were performed to compare the glycemic response between the breakfasts. Results : 34 women with a mean age of 30.8 ± 7.56 were included. Mean 2-hour postprandial glycemic responses to the breakfasts containing <40 g, 40-50 g and >50 g carbohydrate were 113.4 ± 10.9,109.7 ± 21.5 and 120.3 ± 19.8 respectively (p=0.45). Conclusion : This study suggests that in pregnant Indian women with diabetes who have norm al FBS, a less restrictive approach to carbohydrate content in breakfast may be taken by modifying the traditional breakfastst o incorporate low Glingredients.
