Abstract

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk factors including elevated waist circumference, blood pressure, triglycerides, cholesterol and fasting glucose levels. The presence of three or more of the factors increases a person's risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease later. It has been estimated that almost nine per cent of teenagers may be suffering from metabolic syndrome, which may cause heart diseases and diabetes in adulthood. The uniform case definition of the syndrome has promoted epidemiologic investigations to establish the prevalence and characteristics of the syndrome across different adult populations. These studies have revealed role of metabolic syndrome in precipitating type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease and related mortality.
