Abstract

On the global perspective, India has the highest concentration of tribal population excluding that of Africa. According to 1981 census 7.85 per cent of the population of India comprised schedule tribes in the 25 states and Union Territories. About 80 per cent of the tribal population is concentrated in eight states with Bihar occupying the third position following that of Madhya Pradesh and Orissa.
