Abstract

Maternal anaemia is seen in atleast 40 to 60 per cent of the expectant mothers in developing countries. Surveys on haemoglobin levels of expectant mothers carried out in different parts of the country by the Indian Council of Medical Research indicate that while 15 to 20 per cent are anaemic at the on set of pregnancy, the incidence increases to 60 to 70 per cent in the last trimester of pregnancy.
