Abstract

Vitamin A deficiency is one of the most devastating public health problems in India. The incidence is particularly high among the preschool children of low income groups. The general effect of vitamin A deficiency is impairment of growth. The more specific effects are seen in the eye in the form of xerosis of the conjunctiva and Bitot's spots, and it has been recorded in five to 11 per cent of children in Southern and Eastern India.
