Abstract

Solvent extraction of alkali metal cations (Na+ nd K+) from aqueous solution by 2,2'-di-o-carboxy phenoxy diethyl ether in chloroform is reported. Studies have been made on electrical potential of the aqueous phase during extraction. Interesting oscillatory behavior in extracting ability by the ligand is seen for both the cations whereas oscillatory electrical potential is observed for Na+ at increased metal ion concentration. The optimum pH range for maximum extraction using this ionophore is 5-7.
