Abstract

Size distribution of linear aggregates in solution has been derived by the consideration of stepwise association of molecules on the basis of law of mass action. Taking account of the configurational degeneracy of linear aggregates, the association constant is found to be inversely proportional to the aggregation number. Such a series of stepwise association yields the Poisson distribution of aggregates when the association constant is very large. This result is completely different from that so far presented, which leads to the most probable distribution of aggregates.
