Abstract

Oyster mushroom is an edible fungus commonly known as ‘Dhingri’ in India. This nutrition-rich mushroom is cultivated worldwide. Cultivation procedure of the mushroom is simple and can be grown on moist bed of plant wastes. Parameters like, atmospheric temperature, relative humidity and substrate conditions of culture bed are vital for mushroom growth. The mushrooms are susceptible to some bacterial and fungal diseases. Sterilisation of bed and application of antibiotics are needed for controlling diseases. Usually a crop takes about 45 days to mature and hence, 6-8 crops can be grown in controlled condition in a year. Mushrom cultivation is comparatively easy, ingredients cheap and commonly available. Mushroom cultivation has enough potential for good economic return and can be an attractive option for the growers.
