Abstract

The importance of iodine as an essential element arises from the fact that it is a constituent of thyroid hormone-thyroxine (T4) and tri iodothyronine (T3). Thyroid hormones are essential for normal growth including physical and mental development in man and animal1. The basic effect of iodine deficiency is to interfere with the production of thyroid hormones.
