Children are the nation's biggest investment for development and must be given every opportunity to be mentally alert and physically strong. Yet they are the most neglected segment of the population. Under nutrition is an important factor contributing to the death of young children. Malnutrition and anemia in young children are substantial problems in India. Malnutrition in young children puts them at a higher risk of experiencing health problems such as stunted growth, mental retardation and increased susceptibility to infectious diseases.
